L. Gene Van Naarden of Derry, New Hampshire, was born on January 4, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois and passed away on October 20, 2023, at the age of 83 years old.
Gene led an adventurous life as an avid traveler, having worked for TWA airlines. His work took him to many countries that he had the chance to see and explore. A trip to Roma led him to meet an Italian stewardess named Helen, whom he loved very much. Throughout his career, he had the opportunity to live and work in various cities including Chicago, Saudi Arabia, New York, and Derry, NH. His love for exploration led him to learn and speak six different languages showcasing his dedication and passion for different cultures.
After falling in love with the beauty of New Hampshire, Gene decided to settle in Derry. In 1973 he built his cherished home surrounded by acres of land, which he enjoyed walking, painting, and immersing himself in nature. Gene had many feline companions who brought him immense joy. He formed lasting friendships with his neighbors who became like family to him.
Gene served his country as an Army M.P. stationed in Germany, His military service exemplified his dedication and commitment to his country.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Gene found solace and joy in various hobbies. He had a passion for reading, immersing himself in the knowledge and stories of culture, cooking, and gardening. Gene also shared his artistic side with his fiancé Helen, through painting, creating beautiful works of art together. He found peace and inspiration in the wonders of wildlife and appreciating the beauty of nature.
Gene is survived by his sister-in-law, Emily Van Naarden, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his Father, Peter Van Naarden, Mother, Anna Van Naarden, and Brothers Peter and Albert Van Naarden. He lost his beloved fiancé Helen in 1997.
Gene will be remembered for his vibrant spirit, love for exploration, and the kindness that he extended to those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of family, friendship, adventure, and an unwavering zest for life. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
